Gilbarco MPD-1

Description
The MPD-1 succeeded the MPD-A3 in Gilbarco’s
multiproduct dispenser line. Like the A3, the MPD-1 shares many components with the Highline series. Because of this commonality, it was a relatively inexpensive unit compared to the later MPD-2s and MPD-3s.

One major change is the product pricing, which is

by electronic displays over the nozzle boots rather than being manual, as in most A3s.

MPD-1s were made in two cabinet styles. The majority are “standard profile” and use the same doors as the later MPD-2. Some are “low profile” and have the same door as the MPD-3. High profile doors are approximately 30" and low profile doors are approximately 24". (See page 10 for a door identification drawing.)

Electronics

The MPD-1 is an upgrade to the MPD-A3. It uses the plasma displays, the display interface board, Z-80 logic board, and the prestart-ready regulator and relay boards (T14974-G1, T15077-G1, WO2061-G1, WO1815-G1 (or WO2097-G1) and T14390-G1 respectively). Each of these
boards may also be used in the MPD-A3 units but the reverse is not true.

In the mid-1980’s Gilbarco introduced the Modular series of pumps in an attempt to standardize the pump circuit boards and components among several pump types. Modular units have a small card cage containing the electronic boards and include a programming keypad behind the center access door. Earlier units required a separate Command Module for setting prices at the pump.

The H111B and MPD-1 Modular units both use the smaller plasma type main display (T16226-G2 or G3). This display looks almost identical to the old T14974-G1. The MPD-1 also uses an electronic price per gallon display while the H111B does not.

There are two plasma style displays: the T15994-G1 is the original, taller version. It has 5 digits. When CRIND came on the scene, the T15994-G1 proved too tall to allow the CRIND retrofit kit to be received. Gilbarcointroduced a shorter version of this board, the T17339-G1. This item uses only 4 digits.

Popular Production Options

Standard production options on Gilbarco electronicequipment include cash/credit (2-level) pricing and customer preset. Preset is not a common option and most equipment originally provided with cash/credit pricing has been converted back to one price per grade.

The canopy (valance) was optional. All Gilbarco MPDs from the A3 through the Advantage use
the same canopy sides and ends. Mounting brackets vary from model to model.

Retrofit Options

MPD-1s were available with the Highline type oval head totally exposed as in the A3 or with a sheet metal shroud, as shown in the illustration. This shroud can be
retrofitted to open-head units (and to A3s) and is available from DurEquip.

Suction Pumps and Blenders

The MPD-1 chassis was also used for blending
dispensers. MPD-1 fixed blenders look like standard MPD-1s, but the center product is blended from the other two grades. The blend valve orifices can be changed in the field to select one of eight mid-grade blend ratios.

Console Compatibility

Transac-12 series, TCR, TCRG, TCRG/2, TS-1000, TCR-15 G-Site. Requires Distribution Box between console and equipment. The Triangle MicroSystems MPC will also operate the MPD-1.

Comments/Usage Recommendation

The MPD-1 remains a good choice in used equipment. MPD-1’s can be brought up to date electronically by installation of a retrofit MPD-3 head.

The vast majority of older Gilbarco meters leak to one degree or another. Buyers of used Gilbarco equipment should expect that, in most cases, the meter(s) will need replacement or will need to have gaskets and seals replaced. This tendency toward leaks is worsened in equipment where gaskets have dried out due to extended
storage before re-installation.
